With only 13 and a half months left to adventure here in the East Coast, Geoff and I have resolved to make it to the ocean at least once a month except potentially in the coldest months. This because we will be headed back to Arizona where, unless the Golden Gate bridge moves to Pheonix, there is no ocean front property. Our first fulfillment of this goal, then, was a picnic at Lighthouse Point. It was pleasant (including a hearty laugh at the second of two days in a row of total blowouts from the youngest adventurer), and educational. We seem to always find something new when we look closely enough out in nature. Does anyone know what kind of skeleton this could be? While we were enjoying our sandwiches we noticed a seagull climbing up in the sky in a circular fashion. Then he dropped something. We watched as he went down and worked at it a minute then repeated the whole process. It turns out he must be a social eater and, wanting to join in our picnic, was dropping his potential meal from way up high to crack it's solid shell. The squishy live creature inside was the planned menu! Maybe all of you already knew that this is one way seagulls get a gourmet meal, but as desert dwellers we were completely enraptured by observing the behavior.
