Last year, we had so much fun visiting Kevin, Kristine, and Thomas during October that several months ago I decided we had to go back for more. And we were not disappointed. It was great to spend time with them. Grandma coming along made it so much better. Some of the hightlights of a wonderful trip include: Halloween town, Porter's Orchards and farm, the Detroit Zoo, and Frankenmuth. Halloween town is the first two collages. There is an old steam engine train that goes 5 or 6 miles through gorgeous countryside. They have huge wooden displays of all kinds of Halloween things out in the fields and woods (see the skeletons in the pic) along the train route. They played funny Halloween songs and both kids were laughing, clapping, and dancing while en route. The train ride is just the beginning. It starts in the center of an old town that someone has bought and kept up in it's entirety. There are about 10 old buildings: a store, farmhouses, theatre, barns, etc. They deck them out in Halloween gear, each with a different theme. Then the kids trick or treat. At the end, everyone eats apple cider donuts and drinks apple cider. And the apples given out at one station are some of the best I've eaten. It was a fantastic afternoon and evening.
A few days later found us at the Detroit Zoo. Between the butterfly garden and a large aquarium where sea lions were within feet of us, swimming over our heads, it provided a zoo experience different than others I've experienced. The giraffe exhibit had a background that looked like Egypt. But better than that is the fact that we saw so many animals very close-up. It was a wonderful day. The cousins had a great time together, as you can see below.
